Welcome back to Fun Fact Tuesday at Statesman Ties. This week we’re heading south to talk about Guatemala, which inspired our Guatemala tie.
Fun Fact 1: Lake Atitlan is the deepest lake in Central America and is ringed by small villages populated with people that still practice traditional Mayan ways of life. It is ringed by three volcanoes and has been called “the most beautiful lake in the world”.
Fun Fact 2: Mayans have left a strong presence in this country. Today, over 22 Mayan languages are still spoken in Guatemala. You can also thank the Mayans for the chocolate bar – which was invented in Guatemala. Mayans considered chocolate the “food of the gods”.
My favorite fun fact: The national bird is the Quetzal. The currency of Guatemala, Guatemalan Quetzal, is named after this bird because in Mayan times, Queztal feathers were used as currency.
