Fun Fact 1: Brazil is a huge country. It’s the 5th largest country in the world by size (8.5 million square kilometers) and population (200.4 million people). It is so big that it spans three different time zones, contains 60% of the Amazon rainforest and is home to the Amazon river – the largest river in the world by volume. During the wet season, the Amazon can be over 30 miles wide. Wow!
Fun Fact 2: Not only is Brazil the only Portuguese-speaking South American country, but it’s also the largest Portuguese-speaking country in the world. This is because in 1500 Portugal colonized Brazil, which finally gained its independence in 1815.
My favorite fun fact: It has the second most airports in the world (right behind the United States) with over 4,000! With such a huge country, I’m not surprised there are so many airports. In fact, flying might be a better option in Brazil the traffic in Brazil is out of control. The world’s longest traffic jam happened there in 2013 stretching out over 192 miles!
