Missionary haircut: A love story

Mind the gap.

One thing not many people know about Eric and I is that we met while serving as missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Montana.

Montana absolutely transformed me. Us, really. I think of it every day in some way or another. Eric and I talk of it often and loved visiting several times while attending school in Idaho. So many sacred things have happened there. Most importantly, a friendship that was a foundation for our family.

We have so many treasured memories from Montana. Our home is slowly and surely becoming a shrine to the state. We have proudly displayed the Montana flag, rock a “Get Lost” bumper sticker and have enough Montana-themed prints that multiple people ask us if we’re from Big Sky Country.

A tie that means something

But I have to tell you about my favorite new shop for missionary memorabilia and gifts. Statesman Ties is what mission story dreams are made of. It’s a tie of your mission, people! The tie is 100% woven silk with designs inspired by the state’s or country’s flag. Well, coming from a couple that decorates with the Montana flag, how could we pass this up?

There are dozens of missions to choose from, with more on the way. Rob and Amy, who own the shop, (who also both served missions, hashtag totes presh) are so friendly and kind to work with. They are truly passionate about giving and creating a mission keepsake. I can’t wait to gift a tie to my brothers. (Don’t worry, there like a 2 percent chance they read this blog, so they’ll still be surprised.)

Eric loves the tie. And I love Eric. So really, it’s a match made in heaven. Or Montana. Which is basically the same thing anyway.

This is our story.

When I got my mission call to Billings, Montana, in November 2009, needless to say I was somewhat deflated.

If you’re LDS, you know that so many prospective missionaries talk about that moment they read in their letter where God has sent them to labor in his wide, white field that is ready to harvest. The spirit overwhelms them, often times to tears, and they just. know. that’s where they are meant to serve.

Yeah. That didn’t happen for me.

It was a different kind of tears that overwhelmed me. The angry, confused, disappointed, someone-at-Church-headquarters-has-a-twisted-sense-of-humor kind of tears.

Alas, after some solid humbling from God to me, I knew that Montana was where I was meant to serve. I just had no idea that while I was serving with my whole heart in Montana, God was preparing it for the greatest blessing of my life.

Granted, Eric wasn’t the reason I served a mission. Far, far from it, in fact.

I served for a woman named Jane. A man named Marvin. A family named the Callisons. Ultimately, I served for Jesus Christ. For the opportunity to be “called of Him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life.”

Eighteen months after stepping foot into Big Sky Country (yes, it really is bigger), I boarded a plane back home to California, giant tears streaming down my face. I still feel the pain of leaving my mission.

For about a year afterward, I wandered through school, one and a half relationships and a million more first dates, finally swearing off dating for a long time.

In June of 2012, I must have told God these plans, because the ripples of his belly laugh rattled my neatly folded and planned out life.

On June 26, I got a Facebook message from an old mission friend, Eric Whitlock.

Elder Whitlock and I had served around each other for the backend of my mission. We met in Kalispell, Montana, where we served in the same general area, called a district. We struck up a friendship but I remember distinctly thinking, “I would never date Elder Whitlock. He’s super young and has really bad hair.”

Oh, bless your heart, Sister Buchanan.

Call me maybe

But it was his Facebook message that did the trick.

“HIIIIIIIIIIII:D I am home. And it IS crazy. Here’s my number. Call me maybe!”

I laughed, called him and we started chatting regularly on the phone. A few weeks later, we met up in St. George for a mission reunion to celebrate the homecoming of our mission president and his sweet wife, who had just finished their three years of service as well. When I saw Elder Whitlock, now Eric (the newer model had much better hair), he picked me up off the ground, twirling me around in our first hug. Missionaries, who dedicate their time, efforts and heart to teaching about the Doctrines of Christ also avoid physical contact with the opposite sex except for handshakes. This was some serious new territory for us.

Yet we were nearly inseparable for the rest of the weekend, and I knew I had someone special when he stayed up until 2 in the morning to talk to me on the phone so I would make it back home to Rexburg, Idaho safely after driving the full trek back from St. George.

We went on our first official date to the world’s worst haunted house in October, saw Les Miserables for a magical date in December when he kissed me the first time and were dating exclusively by the first of 2013.

Eric decided to come to BYU-Idaho to pursue ~~his education~~ me. In February we sat in the Rexburg Temple and decided to be married. On March 27, Eric officially asked me to be his wife and on July 13, 2013, almost a year to the day since he literally swept me off my feet in St. George, Eric and I were married for time and all eternity in the Mesa Arizona Temple.

And through it all we have each other, God, and some perfect memories of Montana.

A TIE THAT MEANS SOMETHING

Today I wanted to share with you a wonderful gift I came across with. Statesman Ties is a wonderful gift for a special man in your life. A tie that has a meaning behind it. Heritage and “A Tie That Means Something”

You guys! So many beautiful and exciting things came into our home last month, and I am so excited to begin sharing them with all of you! This gorgeous gift from Statesman Ties was the first to arrive, and I have so much to say about it, I don’t even know where to begin.

At BYU-Hawaii, Skyler and I had the blessing of being surrounded by so many world cultures. After our time creating lasting friendships and working in the Polynesian Cultural Center, we really feel that we carry a small piece of the spirit of Polynesia in our hearts.

Something that always struck me about our friends was their knowledge of their ancestors and their stories. They always knew who, what, where and when! They celebrated and honored not only where they came from, but also WHO they came from. I hope that is a tradition we can carry on with our own family.The BYU-Hawaii flag circle, representing the 75+ world cultures at the university.I believe that every family has a story to tell. A story of trials, mountains moved by faith, and the courage it took to BE. When I think of teaching the story of our family to our children, I can’t help but think of our grandmothers. Women who I look up to and hope to keep alive in our children’s memories. I hope to instill in them a desire to know their ancestors and remember their experiences.I found that same desire to remember in the mission of Statesman Ties. I love their tag line: “A Tie That Means Something.” When I was choosing a tie for Skyler -guys, so many terrific options- I started thinking about our home here in Idaho, then I thought of the profound effect his mission experiences had on him while serving in France. I started to ponder what each tie would mean to him, and ultimately we ended up choosing the South Korea tie together.

Many people do not know that Skyler is half Korean – 1/4 North, and 1/4 South. His grandmother actually escaped to South Korea from North Korea as a teenager seeking political and religious asylum. Her family had converted to Christianity, and her father, a doctor and prominent member of the community, was jailed several times for refusing to promote communism.

When I saw on their website that Statesman Ties can add a customized message, I knew I wanted to add something to pay homage to all of our ancestors. The owner’s amazing wife hand sewed the customized embroidery and tag on the back of the tie with “We all bear within us those who came before,” adapted from this Liam Callanan quote: “We all carry, inside us, people who came before us.”

I really believe that we are capable of the great strength, faith, and courage our ancestors possessed. We too can be, because they were! MY CALIFORNIA DREAM: HOW I MET MY HUSBAND

Recently the company Statesman Ties reached out to me about their unique ties. Eric chose the California tie right away, and we had our amazing friend Erin from Erin K. Photo take some pictures for us. This weekend he’s out of town camping, which has made me miss him a WHOLE lot. I’m asked all the time how I met my husband so I think It’s a perfect time to think back and write about how I met my California dream boy while sharing these pretty pictures.

In order to start this story, I need to back up. About a month after I placed Greyson for adoption (you can catch up with my adoption story here), my friend Mitch from high school reached out to me. He was serving an LDS mission in Pennsylvania and had felt the need to reach out and see if I was doing okay. He heard that I’d struggled and was kind enough to be my friend. Mitch had a missionary companion named Eric. Around the same time that Mitch felt strongly to reach out to me, Eric felt strongly that he needed to officially break up with a girl he had dated before he left.

Fast forward nearly a year. I was finally in a good place in my life. I was going to college, I had a great job and some great friends. I hadn’t had much luck in the dating department, so I’d decided that I was really going to just focus on myself. Mitch and I had kept in touch throughout his mission and it was time for him to come home.

In our church, we hold special homecomings for the missionary where they speak about their mission to friends and family with a luncheon afterwards. Mitch had his homecoming scheduled the first Sunday he was back. The morning of his homecoming, I woke up feeling SO tired. I’d been hanging out late with friends the night before and I really didn’t want to get up and get ready by 9am. But I knew I just had to come and give a hug to my awesome friend who had been such a huge help to me during a difficult time. So I went to the homecoming and planned on skipping the luncheon so I could go home and sleep. As I was about to leave, Mitch insisted that I get some food. I couldn’t pass up food (I never can) so off I went.

I looked around the room and saw a few people I knew from high school. I said hello to some, got some food and realized that pretty much all of the tables were full. The tables with open seats had people sitting down that I didn’t know. There were also a couple of empty tables left. I didn’t want to be a loser and sit by myself, so I decided to sit by a stranger.

He was a handsome guy sitting by himself. I naturally assumed, because he was so dashing, that he had to have been there with someone (a female someone). I boldly asked if I could sit at his table, he said yes, and with the assumption that he had a girlfriend or wife, I sat a couple of chairs away. I looked up at him and I’m telling you guys: he seemed familiar to me. He had these beautiful, kind, green eyes, dark brown hair and the most perfect smile I had ever seen in my life. I was so lost in those green eyes that I barely heard him ask, “So, how do you know Mitch?” I told him that he was a friend from high school and the stranger I was slowly falling in love with told me that he had been companions with Mitch in Pennsylvania about a year ago (ring any bells) and that he had just returned from his mission 6 weeks earlier.

I deducted that since he was pretty fresh off of his mission that he could indeed be single. I pretended I couldn’t hear what he was saying, so I moved to the seat next to him (smooth). I found out that he was attending Utah State University (about an hour away from me) but that he was originally from Orange County, California. I’ve always loved California. I love the beach, the sun, the vibe, everything. Growing up, I always wished that I lived by the beach and would dream about marrying a California surfer boy. I turned on my flirting A-Game and said, “If you’re from Orange County, I’m sure you surf. You should teach me how to surf sometime.” He smiled at me with that perfect smile and told me that he would indeed teach me how to surf. Score. For the record: I still don’t know how to surf.

We continued to talk as a few other people sat down at our table. We all ended up hanging out and having a great time, but I still wanted to spend most of my time talking to my handsome stranger. Mitch sat down to say hello and we were officially introduced. Up to this point I hadn’t even asked for his name. I now knew that his name was Eric. I began planning our wedding, naming our future children, and designing our home in Orange County in my mind. Just kidding. Kind of.

I wanted to hang out talking with him for the rest of the day, but eventually Eric needed to go. I remember thinking that if he didn’t ask me for my number, then I was asking for his. Luckily, as soon as we stood up, he pulled out his phone and nervously asked for mine. It was adorable and I’ve never been more excited to give a boy my number in my life.

I went home and told my sisters and mom all about this handsome boy I had met. I did a sleuthy Facebook search where I found his profile and sent him a friend request. He accepted that evening and I was the one to send the first message. I totally pursued him and I’m not even ashamed. We talked on Facebook back and forth for the rest of the evening and then he texted me the next morning. That night he called me asking me out on our first date (which I could legitimately write an entire blog post about). The rest, they say, is history.

We like to say that our meeting was “fate” because it was such a slim chance. Apparently he struggled to get to the homecoming as well. He was only planning on staying for a few minutes, but once we began talking he didn’t want to leave. Eric has told me that the entire time we were talking that day, there was a voice in his head telling him to ask for my number. If Mitch hadn’t felt strongly to reach out to me, if Eric hadn’t felt strongly enough to break up with that other girl, if either one of us had decided not to go to the homecoming, we would never have met. I believe God placed Eric in my life and I am grateful every single day that He did.

It’s now been over 5 years and as you can probably tell, I’m even more in love with him now than I was that first day we met.
